Belize with Babies, Part 2: Jungle Adventures on the Mainland
From Mayan ruins to rainforest naps, here’s how we explored Belize’s interior with toddlers in tow.
After three sunny, sand-filled days in San Pedro, we made our way to Belize’s mainland for a totally different adventure: lush jungle, wildlife, and ancient ruins. If you’re wondering whether inland Belize is baby and toddler-friendly—spoiler alert—it is! With the right planning (and snacks), we had a fun, flexible few days that blended exploration and rest beautifully.
Arrival & the Belize Zoo
We landed back at Belize City International Airport (BZE) and picked up our rental car from Crystal Auto, just across the parking lot. We had requested two car seats in advance so we didn’t have to fly with them. They were available—but be prepared to install your own. Car seats aren’t commonly used in Belize, and while they’re available, staff may not be trained on proper installation.
Our first stop was the Belize Zoo, about a 30-minute drive from the airport. It’s a small, charming zoo that showcases native Belizean wildlife in a natural setting. If you go, try to time your visit for the morning or late afternoon—we arrived in the heat of the day and many animals were hiding out of sight. Still, the kids loved it!
Bonus tip: Check the Belize Zoo’s website before your visit—if you’re lucky, you may be able to schedule a tapir feeding experience, which is a hit with kids and adults alike.
We made a quick stop at Art Box, a gift shop and café on the way, and ended up loving it so much we stopped again later in the trip. It provided some much-needed creature comforts of home—including my daily iced matcha latte with oat milk—while also offering a curated selection of artisan gifts from Belize, including the famous Marie Sharp’s hot sauce, locally roasted coffee, cacao products, and more.
Then we headed to our home base: Jaguar Creek.
Arriving at Jaguar Creek
Jaguar Creek holds a special place in my heart—my family built the lodge when I was a child, and today I help manage it through The Goble Family Foundation. It’s a rainforest eco-lodge tucked into the jungle, with cabanas connected by winding boardwalks and surrounded by natural beauty.
When we arrived, the front desk staff helped with our bags and got us settled. We booked two rooms—one with A/C and one open-air.
- The A/C room was a welcome break from the heat and great for napping.
- The open-air room gave a deeper immersion into nature, with screens all around so you could hear the jungle sounds at night.
If you forget anything, the gift shop at Jaguar Creek stocks basics like bug spray, sunscreen, and other small travel essentials—which definitely came in handy!
After afternoon naps, we enjoyed happy hour at the bar and dinner at the dining lodge—both of which are baby-friendly and relaxed.
Exploring the Inland Highlights
The next morning, my friend and her little one were up early and strolled the loop trail at Jaguar Creek—a short, peaceful nature walk perfect for early risers. After breakfast, we packed up and drove to Cahal Pech, one of the smaller Mayan ruins near San Ignacio.
We brought our strollers—but would not recommend it. There are a lot of stairs and uneven terrain. Baby carriers would have been a better bet!
We chose Cahal Pech over Xunantunich because it’s smaller and more shaded, which worked well with toddlers. The kids were able to climb and explore the ruins safely, and it felt like a true once-in-a-lifetime moment.
We did have one hiccup—one of the littles took a tumble and got a cut on his head. Luckily, La Sante Pharmacy in San Ignacio was just a quick 3-minute drive away. They were helpful and efficient, and we were back on our feet (and bandaged up) in no time.
For lunch, we headed to Guava Limb Restaurant and Café—an absolute must if you’re anywhere near San Ignacio. Delicious food, great service, and a beautiful garden setting.
Back to Jaguar Creek
After lunch, we made a quick stop at Brodies in Belmopan to restock on diapers. It’s a well-stocked supermarket, but the milk selection was limited. We were able to find what we needed at Huang Mart, just a few minutes away—worth knowing if you’re looking for baby essentials while inland.
Then it was back to Jaguar Creek for naps, followed by a late afternoon run on the grassy lawn—perfect for the toddlers to burn off energy. The kids were a little cranky that evening (likely from the heat), and the kitchen kindly boxed up our dinner so we could take it back to our rooms.
It’s also worth noting: Jaguar Creek has high chairs! Only the second place we encountered on the whole trip that did.
A Slow, Beautiful Last Day
We spent our final day taking it easy. Jaguar Creek is right across the road from Blue Hole National Park, so we popped over in the morning for a cool swim and some light cave exploring. It’s a short walk from the parking area, and the clear blue water is refreshing and shallow enough for little ones to enjoy—just remember to bring bug spray!
For lunch, we headed into Belmopan and ate at Cocogardens—a fantastic spot for families. There’s a spacious outdoor area with toys and an enclosed trampoline, so the kids could play while we ate and relaxed.
That evening, instead of venturing out again, we opted to stay in and enjoy a peaceful final meal on the creekview deck at Jaguar Creek—a quiet, beautiful way to end our mainland adventure.
Traveling Without Both Parents? Read This!
If you’re traveling to Belize with a child and only one parent is present, Belizean immigration requires a notarized parental consent letter from the other parent listed on the birth certificate.
Without this document, you may be denied entry into the country.
Be sure to have this letter notarized before your trip and keep it with your travel documents—you’ll need to show it at immigration upon arrival.

- Bug spray (seriously!)
- Quick-dry water shoes or sandals
- Sun hats and lightweight, long-sleeve shirts
- Flashlight/headlamp (for jungle paths at night)
- Baby carrier (essential for ruins and walks)

- Med kit with band-aids, fever meds, antihistamines
- Snacks + reusable water bottles
- Bathing suits + towels for Blue Hole or creek dips

Mainland Belize offers something truly special—lush scenery, rich history, and a more peaceful pace. We found that traveling with toddlers here was not only possible but incredibly rewarding. From climbing Mayan ruins to splashing in the jungle, it was a trip filled with moments we’ll never forget.
Whether you’re coming to Belize for the beach or the rainforest, my advice is this: don’t skip the mainland. And if you can, make Jaguar Creek your home base—it’s a place built with families (and deep love for Belize) at its heart.
